The San Mateo campground is next to Camp Pendleton Marine base in San Clemente, California, and is part of San Onofre State Beach. It’s an attractive campground with lots of room between sites. There is a scenic 1.5 mile nature trail that connects the campground to Trestles Beach. A creek, San Mateo Creek, is just east of the campground and goes all the way to the ocean. It has created a wetland habitat for lots of critters, some of which are rare and/or endangered.

This is a long one that covers 2 weeks and 4 campgrounds. I tried to sum it all up as concisely as possible, but I do ramble sometimes and it’s hard to choose just a few pictures from a large collection. This post might be a good one if you are having trouble sleeping.

In July 2015 we took two weeks off and towed our Airstream up to Moss Landing, which is a little north of Monterey, California. We only towed between 200 – 300 (at most) miles a day so we made overnight stops both to and from. It’s a beautiful drive with lots to see and do.

Broken Window and Awning

It’s really quite easy. I’ve done it. Put your awning out in the rain and don’t have one end of it a lot lower than the other end. When the awning fills up with water, the awning supports will snap and the pieces attached to the spring mechanism will spin around and thrash the aluminum on the side of your trailer. It sounds like your tailer has been hit by lightning and it shakes the heck out everything. Quite exhilarating, expensive and is best experienced on the second day of your vacation. I know.

Right after Christmas in 2014, we made a week long trek to Phoenix, Arizona to visit relatives. The RV parks we stayed in on our way there, in Phoenix and during our return were not very interesting. I’ll briefly mention the one in Phoenix only because we stayed there for four days. The other two were one night we need a place to stay campgrounds.

The first time out in our new Airstream was to East Shore RV Park that is located within Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park, San Dimas, California. We picked this place because it was less than 30 minutes from home and about 30 minutes away from our Airstream dealer, just in case we had a problem.
